Burgundian's war : Swiss Banner - Glarus
Après URI, et BERN, voici une nouvelle série de bannières utilisées par les Suisses durant les guerres de Bourgogne, il s'agit du canton de Glarus. Par chance, une bannière d'époque a été conservée dans le musée local et nous permet de se faire une idée de la forme de la bannière de l'époque.
Comme pour les autres canton, on se retrouve avec 3 types de bannières : des rectangulaires, à la fois attestée par des artefacts et par les illustrations, des carrés (avec les deux variantes). Le blason traditionnel représente une figure de Saint Fridolin (Ce saint est un missionnaire qui évangelisa le canton durant le VIeme Siècle d'après la légende) sur un fond de Gueule (Rouge). La bannière conservée au musée cantonal possède une bande or (peut être le vestige d'une queue ?).
Bizarement, la représentation de la bannière sur l'enluminure de la Bataille de Nancy est quasiment identique au desing original de la bannière avec l'ajout d'une croix d'argent en arrière de Saint Fridolin. A priori, l'ensemble des cantons suisses ont marqués leurs bannières de ce symbole.
After URI, and BERN, here is a new series of banners used by the Swiss during the Burgundian wars, it is the canton of Glarus. By chance, a period banner has been preserved in the local museum and allows us to have an idea of the shape of the banner of the time.
As for the other cantons, we find ourselves with 3 types of banners: rectangular ones, both attested by artifacts and by illustrations, and square ones (with two variants). The traditional coat of arms represents a figure of Saint Fridolin (this saint is a missionary who evangelized the canton during the VIth century according to the legend) on a Gueule (Red) background. The banner preserved in the cantonal museum has a gold band (perhaps the remnant of a tail?).
Oddly enough, the representation of the banner on the Battle of Nancy illumination is almost identical to the original desing of the banner with the addition of a silver cross behind Saint Fridolin. In principle, all Swiss cantons have marked their banners with this symbol.
