XVth Century Banners - Burgundia Duke Banners
Pour commencer cette nouvelle série sur le thème des guerres de Bourgogne, j'ai choisi de faire les bannières Ducales. Pour rappel, le Duc de Bourgogne, désirant élever son duché au rang de Royaume, nécessitait de consolider la continuité territoriales de ses possétions, malheureusement séparée par le duché de Lorraine et par l'Alsace. Charles se fit donc de nombreux ennemis, tous financés en sous main par un roi de France, Louis XI, qui semble avoir inspiré Machiavel.
Après avoir chauffé à blanc les Suisses, qui n'en demandez pas tant, Louis XI les lancent contre les territoires de Bourgogne.
Malheureusement pour lui, Charles le témerraire perdra ses troupes, son trésor, son influence et enfin la vie en moins de 4 batailles décisives. Il laisse de tels trésors aux Suisses lors de ces défaites que la légende dit que les diamants se négociaient moins d'une pièce d'or. En tout cas, Les troupes Suisses nous rapportèrent et surtout conservèrent un ensemble superbe de bannières Bourguignones trouvées sur le terrain.
Pour commencer, je vous propose les bannières aux armes du Duc. Celles-ci sont principalement issues des sources principales. A priori d'après les ordonnnances, chaque compagnie possédait une série de bannières assorties représentant un saint ou une sainte ainsi que des bannières ducales.
Les sources (voir la blibiographie en fin d'articles) nous en ont rapporté de 3 principaux Type : les carrés, les rectangulaires et des étandards à queues. J'ai ajouté également la bannière qui flottait sur la tente du Duc,
To begin this new series on the theme of the Burgundian wars, I have chosen to make the Ducal banners. As a reminder, the Duke of Burgundy, wishing to raise his duchy to the rank of Kingdom, needed to consolidate the territorial continuity of his possessions, unfortunately separated by the duchy of Lorraine and by Alsace. Charles thus made many enemies, all financed underhand by a king of France, Louis XI, who seems to have inspired Machiavelli.
After having warmed up the Swiss, who did not ask for so much, Louis XI launched them against the territories of Burgundy.
Unfortunately for him, Charles the bold will lose his troops, his treasure, his influence and finally his life in less than 4 decisive battles. He left such treasures to the Swiss during these defeats that the legend says that diamonds were traded for less than a gold coin. In any case, the Swiss troops brought back and especially kept a superb set of Burgundian banners found on the field.
To begin with, I offer you the banners with the Duke's arms. These are mainly from the main sources. According to the ordinances, each company had a set of matching banners representing a saint as well as ducal banners.
The sources (see the bibliography at the end of the articles) have reported 3 main types of banners: the square ones, the rectangular ones and the tails banners. I have also added the banner that floated on the Duke's tent,cipales bannières ducale de Bourgogne -guerres de Bourgogne.
